FALLING!
An odd thing is happening
And, I don’t know why.
But, it seems that I’m falling
From way up in the sky.
I don’t remember climbing,
Or being up in a plane,
But, here I am falling
From the sky, just the same.
At first, it was scary.
At one point, I was screaming!
Then I stopped. And, I thought
That I must just be dreaming.
I had pried open my eyes
And then looked around.
To see just how far
That I was from the ground.
But, I didn’t see ground.
Only unending sky.
And, now I’m still falling.
But, I still don’t know why.
At one point, I had tried
Different things that would slow me.
But, I don’t know if they worked.
Because there’s nothing below me.
When you’re falling, I’ve learned,
It’s quite hard to know.
If you’re falling quite fast
Or falling quite slow.
I’m now feeling the wind,
in my hair and my face.
And my pyjamas are whipping
All over the place!
Wait… what? My pyjamas?
Why am I wearing those?
You would think, if I’m falling,
I’d be wearing clothes!
Okay… Falling in pyjamas
Seems a bit of bad luck.
I’m not sure what to do now…
Oh, hey! Look! A duck!
I’m not alone now!
At least there’s that!
But, why is it wearing
That fancy top hat?
And, it’s not even flying…
It’s having a chat.
With another… something…
What is that… a cat?!?
Yep. A cat wearing pants
And sipping some tea…
And, now they’ve both stopped
And are looking at me.
Okay… this is odd.
Something’s really not right.
Maybe there’s something
Wrong with my sight.
I think that I’ll close
My eyes really tight.
And then count to three
And then all will be right.
1… 2… 3…
Nope. I’m still falling!
Now with nothing around.
Just me and the sky…
Wait… what is that sound?
Is it thunder? A plane?
A big hummingbird?
Or, maybe it’s… it’s a…
Darn. What’s the word?
It’s long and has wings…
And, of course, it can fly…
It looks like a dragon…
Oh, right! Dragonfly!
A dragonfly would
Really be neat to see.
Unless it is hungry…
And tries to eat me!
That wouldn’t be neat.
No, no. Not at all…
I think that I’d rather
Continue to fall.
But, I’m looking around me
And I still haven’t found
Exactly what could be
The cause of that sound.
It sounds like it must be
Coming from over there…
I’m squinting my eyes
And continue to stare…
I see something small
Or just far away…
And, I think that it’s moving?
It’s quite hard to say…
No… wait… I see now.
My sight is improving.
It’s getting much bigger
And, it’s definitely moving!
The sound’s getting louder
The closer it gets.
And, I know it sounds weird
But, I think that it’s… pets?
I see dogs, cats and hamsters
And lizards and ferrets.
A herd of guinea pigs
And some very bright parrots.
They’re all kind of flying
Up and down, side to side.
And, I’m looking around,
But, I’ve no place to hide!
Okay… this is odd.
Something’s really not right.
Maybe there’s something
Wrong with my sight.
I think that I’ll close
My eyes really tight.
And then count to three
And then all will be right.
1… 2… 3…
Well, the pets are all gone.
And the duck and the cat.
It’s just me again.
And I’m quite fine with that!
It’s really quite peaceful
With no one around.
Just quietly falling…
Wait… is that the ground?!?
It is! And, it’s coming up
Really quite fast!
But, I guess that I knew
That this fall couldn’t last!
I’m now falling through clouds
And see mountains rising.
And the speed that I’m going
Is really surprising!
I see all of the outlines
Of cities and towns
Get bigger and bigger
As I keep going down!
I see lakes that are growing
And now I see trees!
I’m suddenly feeling
Quite weak in my knees!
The ground’s getting closer!
I continue to fall!
I fear that this might be
The end of it all!
Now buildings and houses
Are coming up fast.
I’m thinking this moment
Just might be my last!
Oh, no! Here it comes!
I’ve closed my eyes tight!
I know that I’ve never
Felt this kind of fright!
As I crash to the ground
I hear a big WHUMP!
And now I’m just lying here
In a great big lump.
Everything’s so quiet.
There’s barely a sound…
So, I open my eyes
And then look around.
I first see my light
Up there on the ceiling.
And total confusion
Is what I am feeling…
I sit myself up
And then look left and right.
And familiar things
Come into my sight.
The light on my clock
Glows its comforting glow.
And I seem to be fine
As my breath starts to slow.
I see the floor of my room
My lamp and my pillow.
My books on my shelves
And the moon through my window.
I’m looking around,
And shaking my head.
I didn’t fall far…
I just fell out of bed!
